Roadside Trees
Roadside work demands specialist skills, equipment and permits. We liaise with local councils to arrange road closures and traffic management, and use our excavator, tree shear and winch-equipped tractor to dismantle trees safely away from the road.
Working with roadside trees often requires specialist skills, equipment and relevant permits. At W. Jones Forestry we ensure everything is done for you, offering a seamless service.
From the initial steps to the completion of the project, we will take care of everything for you. We liaise with local councils to ensure appropriate road closures and traffic management is in place to safeguard not only us and our client but also the general public.
Due to the nature of roadside trees, a harvester is often not the right machine for the job, and this is where our excavator and purpose built tree shear comes into its own. The excavator will dismantle the tree safely from the top. Our versatile Valtra tractor with its many implements is often used with its winch, roof mounted crane and timber trailer to complete roadside tree projects. The winch allows trees to be pulled safely away from the road to keep both the operator and the general public safe.
Roadside tree projects can be completed in conjunction with harvesting operations, or as one off projects in response to a tree safety report.

Tree Pests & Disease
We are experienced in working with diseased and infected material, including Ash Dieback and the European Spruce Bark Beetle. We use Plant Passports to ensure movement restrictions and plant health notices are adhered to, and keep abreast of current legislation.

We keep abreast of current legislation surrounding pests and disease, ensuring you and your woodland are as protected as possible.
Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus). Ash Dieback is a fungal disease affecting ash trees in the UK. Once an ash tree has contracted the disease there is unfortunately no cure, the tree becomes brittle and dangerous, and it is then more susceptible to other disease which can expedite its decline.
Due to the brittle nature of an affected tree, it can be extremely dangerous to the general public, the landowner and our team whilst removing them. Our team are well versed in the removal of diseased trees, ensuring the safety of the team, surrounding trees and the general public through use of the purpose built harvester, excavator, grab saw and tree shears, and purpose built skidder.
European Spruce Bark Beetle (Ips typographus). The Ips beetle is currently confirmed throughout the South East of England, with spruce trees in this area under strict restriction to prevent the felling and movement of spruce timber products without authorisation.
Work is being undertaken across the South of England to eradicate the beetle by removing infected spruce, and spruce from woodland at risk of infection. Proactive efforts to remove spruce trees from these areas are being undertaken by both private and public landowners before trees become infected, or where a Statutory Plant Health Notice has been received.
Our relationship with the Forestry Commission and authorised processors ensures we can offer a full circle service, from the harvesting to the sale of your timber, to gain you the best possible return.

Heathland Restoration
Heathland restoration removes encroaching scrub and conifers to re-introduce low level grazing, allowing dormant heather to regrow and supporting native bird and reptile species in decline. We work closely with the Forestry Commission and RSPB.

Mulching & Regeneration
Mulching after harvesting leaves the site free of debris and returns leftover material to the soil, suppressing weeds, retaining moisture and insulating roots. The result is hospitable ground for planting or natural regeneration.
At W. Jones Forestry we ensure our sites are left in the best possible condition. Mulching after harvesting operations have finished leaves the site free of any debris. Mulching re-introduces any leftover materials back into the soil, suppressing weeds, helping the soil to retain moisture and insulating remaining tree and plant roots from extreme temperatures.

Sweet Chestnut Coppicing
Trees are felled to the stump between October and April to promote regrowth of straight poles. The tannins in the wood act as a natural rot deterrent, making it ideal for post and rail fencing. Keep the product for your own estate or let us market it for you.
